How to manage your life if you have ADHD.

According to the Cambridge dictionary, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) is a condition in which someone, especially a child, is often in a state of activity or excitement and unable to direct their attention towards what they are doing.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects how the brain works. ADHD causes symptoms like impulse behaviours, inattention, and hyperactivity.  ADHD affects children from ages 3-6, and it may continue into adulthood.

ADHD in adults can be managed, and here are 5 practicals way to manage your life with ADHD:

Stretch your attention span gradually

As an adult with ADHD, train your brain like a muscle. Try to focus on a task for a long time even though it may be hard for you. Use tools like the Pomodoro technique (25 minutes on, and 5 minutes off).

Also, if you’re at a meeting or workshop, you could write while listening to the speaker—it’d help you stay focused.

Create Structure and Stick to Simple Systems

Set routines for your mornings, tasks, and bedtime. You can do this by taking notes and writing lists—and keep consistent. You don’t need to aim for perfection, just start small.

Move your body and get outdoors

Exercise isn’t just good for your body— it calms the mind, boosts your mood, and relieves stress. Choose something vigorous and fun to stick with, you can start with a friend or group of people. Try exercising outdoors so you can benefit from sunshine and green surroundings. Exercises like yoga help to relieve stress, and teach you to better control your attention and impulses.

Prioritise quality sleep

Lack of sleep can aggravate the symptoms of adult ADHD, making it harder for you to manage stress and stay focused throughout the day . Good sleep is non-negotiable; so, you should:

  • Avoid caffeine
  • Create a consistent bedtime
  • Exercise regularly
  • Avoid screens an hour before bed.

Learn to say “no” without guilt

Adults with ADHD may be prone to making too many commitments at work or scheduling too many social events due to their impulsiveness. Learn to pause before agreeing. Always ask:

Does this align with my goals right now?

Managing life with ADHD can be overwhelming, but the process is worth it. Be patient with yourself. Rest when you need to and reset when things get overwhelming.
